Religiosity and Beliefs in Medical Conspiracy Theories Across 37 European Countries During COVID-19

 



During the COVID-19 pandemic, misinformation and medical conspiracy theories spread rapidly across Europe, influencing public attitudes toward vaccines, public health measures, and trust in scientific institutions. A large-scale cross-national study examining 37 European countries reveals that religiosity plays a significant role in shaping beliefs in medical conspiracy theories during times of crisis.

The findings indicate that individuals with higher levels of religiosity especially those who rely strongly on religious authority for guidance were more likely to endorse medical conspiracy narratives related to COVID 19. These included beliefs that the virus was deliberately created, that vaccines were harmful or part of hidden agendas, or that governments and pharmaceutical companies concealed “true” information.

However, the relationship between religiosity and conspiracy beliefs was not uniform across Europe. In countries with high institutional trust, strong science communication, and well-integrated religious organizations, religiosity did not necessarily lead to greater conspiracy endorsement. In some cases, religious communities even acted as protective factors, promoting compliance with health guidelines and encouraging vaccination.

The study also highlights the importance of social trust and education. Lower trust in government, media, and scientific experts amplified conspiracy thinking, regardless of religious affiliation. Conversely, higher education levels and exposure to credible information sources reduced susceptibility to misinformation.

These insights emphasize that religiosity itself is not inherently problematic, but its interaction with political trust, cultural context, and information ecosystems determines its influence on public health attitudes. For policymakers and health communicators, the results suggest that engaging religious leaders and faith-based organizations can be an effective strategy to counter misinformation and promote evidence-based health behavior during future crises.

Understanding how belief systems intersect with medical misinformation is crucial for building resilient societies capable of responding effectively to global health emergencies.
