Dual-Layer Lightning Strike Protection for Carbon Fiber Composites

In the aerospace and automotive industries, carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRCs) are widely valued for their strength, lightweight properties, and fuel efficiency. However, one critical challenge remains—vulnerability to lightning strikes. Unlike metals, CFRCs are poor electrical conductors, making them prone to severe damage when exposed to high-energy lightning events.

To address this, researchers have developed a dual-layer lightning strike protection (LSP) strategy. The first layer integrates a high-conductivity metallic mesh or nanomaterial coating, designed to disperse the electrical energy rapidly. The second layer is an energy-absorbing and thermally stable barrier, which prevents heat-induced delamination and structural weakening of the composite.

This innovative design not only enhances safety and reliability but also aligns with the growing demand for lightweight, eco-friendly transportation solutions. With increasing adoption of electric aircraft and next-generation vehicles, dual-layer LSP could become a game-changer in composite protection technologies.
