Scientists have achieved a remarkable milestone in synthetic biology by creating a bacterium with the smallest genetic code ever recorded a living organism stripped down to only the genes essential for survival. This breakthrough reshapes our understanding of life at its most fundamental level and opens new doors for biotechnology, medicine, and bioengineering.
The engineered bacterium contains fewer than 500 genes, compared to thousands in natural bacteria. By carefully removing non-essential DNA, researchers were able to determine which genes are absolutely necessary for basic cellular functions like growth, replication, and metabolism. Surprisingly, many of these essential genes still have unknown functions, highlighting how much remains to be discovered about even the simplest forms of life.
