Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: The Next Big Thing in Clean Stationary Power

The world of clean energy is buzzing with fresh advancements in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology  and it’s not just in labs anymore! SOFCs, known for converting fuel into electricity with high efficiency and low emissions, are rapidly gaining traction for stationary power generation applications like data centers, factories, and community power systems.

Recent industry reports show the broader fuel cell market is poised for explosive growth, with projections estimating a jump from around USD 5.66 billion in 2025 to over USD 18 billion by 2030. This surge is driven by strong global demand for sustainable, always-on power solutions and supportive decarbonization policies.

Another research release highlights the SOFC market itself set for impressive expansion, with forecasts pointing to high double-digit annual growth as technology adoption climbs worldwide.
South Korea’s Doosan Fuel Cell has recently begun manufacturing SOFC systems using licensed technology from UK developer Ceres, with an initial production capacity aimed at supplying distributed power solutions such as data centers and microgrids.

In Europe, Estonia’s Elcogen unveiled a new facility boosting its SOFC production capacity from 10 MW to an impressive 360 MW  a big leap toward meeting global demand.

Meanwhile, strategic investments are fueling industry growth: HD Hyundai’s affiliate KSOE announced a roughly €45 million investment into Elcogen to expand manufacturing and R&D focused on both stationary power and hydrogen technologies.
