Exclusive | Meta to Create New Applied AI Engineering Organization

In a major strategic shift, Meta is building a new applied AI engineering organization as part of its escalating push into foundational and superintelligence-level artificial intelligence development. According to internal memos reported by The Wall Street Journal and other outlets, the initiative will be led by Maher Saba, a veteran executive from Meta’s Reality Labs division, and will operate under Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth.

The goal of the new organization isn’t research alone it’s real-world engineering execution, translating experimental AI research into robust tools, frameworks, and live data systems that directly enhance Meta’s AI models. Teams within the unit are being designed with an unusually flat structure, with up to 50 individual contributors per manager, signaling a commitment to agility and developer autonomy.

This group will work closely with Meta’s Superintelligence Lab led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang  supporting model evaluation, data annotation, tooling, and infrastructure work that can speed up iteration cycles and improve performance.
